Feedback on the Science Teaching course

Science Teaching participants answer the question: ‘What did you learn?’

Spring 2023:

  • Above many other useful things, I learned how to manage my nervousness during presentations and at the same time not freeze or mess them up.
  • I learnt a lot from the discussions we had in class, listening other people’s experiences and thoughts/philosophies. From the course I also learned a bit about body language, techniques like the 1 min paper.
  • One of the most informative parts that I was not aware of was cognitive theory.
  • A lot of things I did not foresee; addressing student skill levels, handling difficult situations with students, considering how students learn, student-focused instruction.

Autumn 2023:

  • The way to teach, which is very important!!! How to communicate with students, how to handle different kinds of students. The way to make student learn better during the TA session.
  • I learnt that there is so much of science behind teaching. I have not come across concepts like matrix groups before even though they seem natural.
  • Many techniques to work around the problems I am likely to face during my TA sessions.
  • I learned a lot about how teaching works, and especially a toolbox to get over different challenges you may encounter in the classroom. I also got some more theoretical reasons for the things I was already doing just by experience of what seemed to work well.
  • A lot about how to solve problems in regards to teaching. How to consider your own teaching and different ways that you can teach in.
  • A LOT. Class management, cognitive theory of learning and teaching, teaching strategies, making good poster. And gain confidence of teaching
